The Honda NSX needs little introduction. Japan's answer to the likes of Porsche & Ferrari in the 90's, it made a lasting impression that now stretches back 30 years! This was part owed to its performance but perhaps more impressively its build quality and reliability compared to the European exotics of the time.
There were several NSX models released over the 10+ years with special editions such as the NSX Type S, Zanardi and NSX-R. Given the latter had been discontinued, Honda decided to create the Type S Zero for customers who still desired a track focused / fun weekend toy.
The 'Zero' represents the models extreme weight reduction program being 96kg lighter than a standard NSX, and 50kg less than the Type S. It used the NA1 NSX-R suspension, but retained the thicker Type S sway bar. Honda also swapped out the dual mass flywheel clutch for the lighter, more direct dual-disc clutch from the original NSX 5-speed gearbox.
Being track oriented, the Zero had no cruise control, stereo, power door locks, airbags, traction control, power steering, fog lights or even air conditioning, although you could tick it as an option. Other weight reduction included removing lots of the sound deadening material. It was also given carbon-fibre Recaro seats, BBS alloy wheels, mesh engine bay cover and the partition glass thickness had been halved between the engine bay and cabin.
When it came to performance, it was given the bigger 3.2L engine mated to a 6 speed gearbox like the Type S. More power and less weight resulted in it out performing the NSX-R, lapping Suzuka 1.5 seconds faster!
The Type S Zero was even rarer than the NSX-R too, with only 30 models ever produced between 1997 & 2001.
We spotted this 1999 NSX Type S Zero with an astonishingly low 12,000km on the clock! Exceptionally well priced given its rarity at ¥18,000,000 JPY... this maybe reflective of the modifications and not being a totally original example. A seriously special car nonetheless, surely this will be snapped up by someone looking for that very special NSX!
