The year is 1997 and Subaru were already well revered within World Rally. It was also the exact year the WRX Type R STi Version 4 was born. Equipped in much the same way as the 4-door model the biggest exterior change was the silhouette... The Type-R was the first 2-door Impreza which later served as the shape for the 22B and the P1 and became the basis for the WRC rally car, so all in all a significant shape!
Produced from September 1997 to August 1998 the Version 4 cost ¥2,999,000. This lightweight, hardcore model saved 10kg's over the previous 4 door Type RA but still benefited from the RA's close-ratio gearbox, Drivers Controlled Centre Diff (DCCD) and mechanical rear LSD.
It's classic Subaru with a turbocharged EJ20 up front pushing out 280bhp & 260 ft/lb torque. With symmetrical all wheel drive the grip you get out of corners is fantastic, allowing you to deploy full power with little hassle and propelling you down the road at a startling rate!
Famous for their mid range punch these cars also love to rev out, red-lining at 7,800rpm. Not for one second does this car feel unwilling, from the moment the wheels turn you know its derived from the world of rallying.
Cosmetically the Version 4 Type R oozes that late 90's appeal which is only getting cooler with age. A number of colour options were available but this one in Feather White with the signature scooby gold alloys in period correct 16 inch guise reminds you that cars don't need massive wheels to look good, infact quite the opposite in this case.
The rally fog light covers are proudly stamped with the pink STi logo leaving no doubt that this is a performance Subaru. The fantastically retro 90's graphics also help take you back to the era from where it came.
The cabin is all about the driver, with a lovely set of STi bucket seats with the traditional red highlights. White analogue dials make up the cluster which is refreshing in todays world of digital displays.
